Hamilcar (Drepanum)

Punic Wars - Punic Wars Decoration

Background

Hamilcar (Drepanum) was a Carthaginian general during the First Punic War where he successfully helped fight against the Roman Republic at Thermae as well as the Battle of Drepana. However, he was soundly defeated at the Battle of Cape Econmus in 256 BC by the forces of Marcus Atilius Regulus. Nothing is known about his early life and career or what happened to him afterwards, other than his engagements during this war. He has the common name Hamilcar and is often confused with the father of Hannibal Barca named Hamilcar Barca.
