Background

Adherbal, known in Greek as Ατάρβας was an admiral of the Carthaginian navy during the First Punic War. He was responsible for engaging the Roman Republic in the Battle of Drepana in 249 BC where he defeated the Roman consul Publius Claudius Pulcher.
